What is SIMOTRAPS?

SIMOTRAPS is the main name of our electrodynamic train movement simulation software.

SIMOTRAPS software is consisting of two main softwares with two different missions.

The first and older one is DC SIMOTRAPS and the newer one is AC SIMOTRAPS.

Both are extremely user friendly and useful softwares that we are widely using them for simulation of electrodynamic movement of trains in DC and AC train power supply systems.

DC SIMOTRAPS Software

Introduction to DC SIMOTRAPS

Electrodynamic train simulation software called DC SIMOTRAPS is a powerful software for simulation of direct current (DC) traction vehicles . This software is able to calculate and present all the parameters required in the design of traction posts, overhead catenary system or third rail.

Subway trains, trams, monorails and trolley buses are the examples of DC traction power supply systems that can be designed with this software.

Software input data

DC SIMOTRAPS software needs some parameters and input data to perform the simulation. These data include:

      • the plan and profile of the train route,
      • rolling stock specifications,
      • operation parameters,
      • and finally the electrical network specifications.

The parameters of the plan and profile of the route include:

      • the slope,
      • the radius of the curves
      • and the maximum permitted speed along the route,
      • as well as the location of the passenger stations.

Fleet specifications include:

      • the allowable fleet voltage range,
      • auxiliary power,
      • power regenerative capability,
      • tractive effort and braking effort characteristics,
      • train movement resistance parameters,
      • Rolling Stock weight and passenger weight,
      • train acceleration rate change and maximum train traction and braking acceleration.

Operation parameters includes the Dwell time of trains per platform as well as the distance of the trains.

The characteristics of the electrical network include the location of the traction substations, the number of transformers-rectifiers in each traction substation, the rated current of each rectifier, the no-load voltage and the full load of the rectifiers.

On the other hand, to calculate the train voltage drop along the line, it uses the conductor resistance of the power supply to the train along the line as well as the electrical resistance of the third rail or overhead catenary system per unit length and finally the resistance of the running rail to ground.

The other parameter of software input data is the paralleling points of tracks and the amount of resistance between them. This item helps to calculate  effective and  accurate calculation of the running rail voltage.

Software outputs

After getting the input information, the software starts the simulation according to the provided time table and observing the Dwell times in each station, and displays and stores all the parameters online. These parameters include the voltage of all network points, Including trains and traction posts.

It also calculates and displays the currents associated with traction post feeders.

Finally, the software presents a report in which the average values and root mean squares of power and current of traction substations as well as the mean and root mean squares of current and maximum and minimum values for each output feeder of traction substations , Shows in the form of graphic diagrams as well as numerical tables.

In the report provided by the software, the train voltage and rail voltage profiles, as well as the train speed profile and its maximum allowed speed are displayed separately for each  train movement direction. Also, the power consumption profile of trains and their acceleration can be displayed and presented.

All of the above can be simulated and presented in different failure cases of outage of half or total traction substation out of service.  As it seems, this software is able to calculate and present all the parameters required to design a DC transportation system.

AC SIMOTRAPS Software

Introduction to AC SIMOTRAPS

Electrodynamic train simulation software called AC SIMOTRAPS is a powerful AC train simulation software. This software can calculate and present all the parameters required in the design of traction substations, autotransformer substations, and overhead networks in any AC electric railway line.

It is possible to simulate and design simple 25kV AC and 2x25KV AC autotransformer electric railway power supply systems using this software.

Software Input Data

AC SIMOTRAPS software needs some parameters and input information to perform the simulation. These include the plan and profile of the train route, rolling stock specifications, operation parameters, and finally the electrical network specifications.

Route plan and profile parameters include slope, slope radius, and maximum allowable speed along the route, as well as the location of passenger stations.

rolling stock specifications include the permitted voltage range of the vehicle, auxiliary power consumption, power regenerative capability, tractive effort and braking effort, train movement resistance characteristics, train weight, passenger weight, train acceleration change rate, and maximum train traction and braking acceleration and also rotating mass factor rate. This software takes the information of an unlimited number of trains from the operator before the simulation run to use them according to the given timetable in the simulation.

Due to the nature of electric railways and the variety of trains that can travel on the line, the operating parameters in AC SIMOTRAPS software are more complex than the same input data in DC SIMOTRAPS.

An unbounded number of stop times at different stations can also be defined. In the schedule table, for each train departure, the departure time, type of fleet, type of stop of that train at each station, and even the station of origin and destination of the train is definable. In this order, the simulation results will be as close as possible to the real operation situation, with different passenger and freight trains and with different lengths and weights.

The specifications of the electrical network include the location and specifications of traction substations, location and specifications of autotransformer substations, fixed loads connected to the power line, and so on. On the other hand, to calculate the voltage drop across the line, it uses the conductor resistance of the power supply to the train along the line as well as the electrical resistance of the overhead catenary system per unit length and finally the resistance of the moving rail to the ground.

Software outputs

After importing the input information, it is possible to run the software. The simulation calculations are based on the provided schedule and observing the stop times in each station. It displays and stores all the parameters online. These parameters include:

    • The voltage of all network points, Including trains and traction posts;
    • Currents associated with traction substation feeders.

Finally, the software presents a report in which shows the following items:

    • average values and root mean squares of power and current of traction substations
    • mean and root mean squares of current and maximum and minimum values for each output feeder of traction substations.

It shows the mentioned items in the form of graphic diagrams as well as numerical tables. In the report provided by the software, the train and rolling rail voltage profiles, as well as the train speed profile and its maximum allowed speed are displayed separately for each direction of train movement. Also, the power consumption profile of trains and their acceleration can be displayed and presented.

SIMOTRAPS provides all of the above simulations in case of failure of each traction substation or auto-transformer post.

So, this software can calculate and present all the parameters required to design an AC transport system.
